Congratulations to Benjamin Knox on receiving the SAE “Excellence in Oral Presentation” award for his talk entitled “Effects of End-of-Injection Transients on Combustion Recession in Diesel Sprays,” which was presented at the SAE 2016 World Congress in April.

The SPhERe Lab would like to announce that Benjamin Knox will be attending the Spring Technical Meeting of the Central States Section of The Combustion Institute in Knoxville, TN. His talk, entitled “Scaling combustion recession after end of injection in diesel sprays,” will take place on Tuesday, May 17th at 10:05am.

Gina Magnotti will be attending the ILASS-Americas conference in Dearborn, MI. Her talk, entitled “Characterization of Diesel Spray Breakup Models Using Visible and X-Ray Extinction Measurements,” will take place on Monday, May 16th at 12:00pm.

 

April 2016

Dr. Genzale has been selected as a Fellow for the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program. She will attend the Summer 2016 Symposium held at the University of Georgia in May.

The SPhERe Lab would like to announce that Benjamin Knox will be attending SAE World Congress to present his work on “Effects of End-of-Injection Transients on Combustion Recession in Diesel Sprays.” The talk will take place on Tuesday, April 12th at 1:30pm.

SPhERe Lab Undergraduate Researcher John Falcone presented his paper, “Identifying Uncertainties in Diesel Spray Rate-of-Momentum Transients Under Elevated Back Pressure,” at the ASME Internal Combustion Engines Fall Technical Conference in Houston, TX.

Yoontak Kim has accepted a Ph.D. position at the SPhERe Lab and will start in January of 2016. Yoontak will be receiving his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State this December. Congratulations, Yoontak! We look forward to welcoming you at Georgia Tech soon.

Congratulations to Dr. Caroline Genzale on earning the ARO Young Investigator Award. More information on the award can be found here.

Congratulations to Benjamin Knox, Michael Franze and Dr. Caroline Genzale on receiving the “Best Paper” Award for their paper entitled “Diesel Spray Rate-of-Momentum Measurement Uncertainties and Diagnostic Considerations”, which was presented at the ASME 2014 ICEF Conference. This award recognizes the best technical contribution from all papers presented at the meeting. This paper was also recently accepted to the Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power.

Congratulations to Gina Magnotti on receiving the NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship. This summer, she will be collaborating with Dr. Michael Brear at the University of Melbourne on the use of tomography for laser extinction spray measurements.

The SPhERe Lab would like to announce that Benjamin Knox and Gina Magnotti will be attending SAE World Congress in April to present their work. Benjamin’s work is entitled “Combustion Recession After End of Injection in Diesel Sprays.” Gina’s work is entitled “A novel approach to assess diesel spray models using joint visible and x-ray extinction measurements.”

Benjamin Knox and Dr. Caroline Genzale had their paper entitled “Reduced-order numerical model for transient reacting diesel sprays with detailed kinetics” accepted for publication to the International Journal of Engines.

Benjamin’s work is entitled “Recession of Second-Stage Ignition after End-of-Injection in Diesel-like Sprays.” Gina’s work is entitled “A Novel Approach to Assess Diesel Spray Models Using Liquid-Phase Extinction and X-ray Radiography Measurements.”
